“The Force is With Us” Friday, February 3
Message from the Principal: Cooperative learning fits well into the dimensions of good assessment. Formative assessment approaches can be used to monitor student’s learning and the effectiveness of our teaching strategies. Teachers perform observations and activities to monitor students’ learning and the effectiveness of their teaching strategies. As students interact with one another, the teacher can hear and see student’s thoughts, ideas, and even misconceptions. This formative assessment process allows teachers to adjust input, correct problems, identify gaps, and help students grasp the concept well before the problem is revealed with a test score. It is important that teachers take representative samples of the class so they truly understand what students know and don’t know and adjust instruction accordingly. For example, when all students hold up their AnswerBoards at the same time, we see what everyone knows. Cooperative learning provides an ideal context for authentic assessment. Student teams perform skits, present reports, conduct research, share experiences, create literary models and solve challenges. Cooperative learning adds an important authentic context. As students work together, they debate issues, reach consensus, summarize findings, practice different roles, provide feedback, make decisions, generate ideas, negotiate and share. Using cooperative learning enables teachers to easily perform ongoing, authentic assessments across multiple dimensions. Changes for next faculty meeting: This Friday Focus will address three of the four dimensions of effective assessment using cooperative learning. The February 10 focus will address multi-dimensional assessment. The February 17 focus will address cooperative learning and grading. These three installments will take the place of the faculty meeting scheduled for February 7th.
