Dora Erickson Policies

Dora Erickson Elementary expects a high standard of behavior from their students and faculty. Faculty and staff remind students frequently that their good choices will be rewarded, and that poor choices will cause them to lose privileges.  Children determine what happens to them by their own behavior.

Attendance

Good attendance at school is an extremely important aspect of every student’s education and has many carry over implications for success later in life. When a student must be absent from school, it is the parent’s responsibility to contact the school by phone the morning of the absence before 9:00 a.m. Phone calls are made to those absent students that do not contact the school. Maximum benefits from school instruction are gained by regular attendance.

State law requires students to be present 90% of the time. Our school rewards students for Perfect and Faithful attendance (2 or less absences).

Bicycles/Skateboards/Rollerblades/Scooters

Students who ride bikes to school are to park them in one of three bike racks. Bikes are not to be ridden during school hours and must be walked on the school grounds. Bike locks are encouraged at all times. The school is not responsible for lost or damaged bikes. Skateboards, rollerblades, and scooters are not allowed at school.

Birth Certificates

Idaho State Law requires ALL students to present a birth certificate upon entering school.

Birthday Activities

Occasionally, students wish to observe their birthday at school. Each teacher has their own policy concerning this activity: however there are some general guidelines we all follow:
1. Due to health department guidelines. No home-prepared food items my be served as a treat at school.
2. All other activities other than a food treat must be planned with the teacher’s approval.
3. Interruption of the school program should be kept to a minimum.
4. Please do not pass out invitations to private parities at school, as this causes hurt feelings in those not invited.

Cold Weather

When weather becomes extremely cold, students stay indoors. On the advice of the District’s consulting physician, the policy is as follows:

We check wind-chill temperatures on the website throughout the day. When the temperature is zero degrees or below (with or without wind chill), children do not go outside for recess or lunch. There is a difference between uncomfortable temperatures and those that present a health hazard. Please see that your child is dressed appropriately for our cold Idaho winters: a heavy coat, a warm hat, warm boots/shoes and a pair of gloves.

Conferences

Parent Teacher Conferences will be held at the end of the first and the second trimesters to discuss your child’s progress in school. Staff is available to meet on these dates with parents on an individual basis. You will be notified of these times prior to the beginning of conferences. If a need arises during the year, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher or the principal to schedule a meeting.

Conduct and Courtesy

Courtesy and good manners should be the key to a student’s conduct at school. A good attitude toward teacher, staff, and fellow student will make school enjoyable for all. Students are expected to have respect for and to take good care of books, desks, furniture, equipment, computers and other school property.

Day-Care Pickup

For your child’s safety, make sure as you make arrangements for your child to be dropped off or picked up by a day care facility that day care employees are aware that the school has duty personnel from 8:05-8:20 a.m and 2:35-2:50 p.m only (1:20-1:35 Wednesdays). AM Kindergarten students are dismissed at 11:00 and supervision is provided until 11:05 only. Please be sure your children are picked up on time every day.

Discipline

It is our belief that by working together as a team, your child’s education at Erickson will reflect excellence. It is our policy that students be held accountable for their own actions. If a student demonstrates inappropriate behavior, they will be dealt with fairly and with dignity. When necessary, we will involve or inform parents when these things arise. It is our belief that children of active parents experience little misbehavior. We invite parents to come in and discuss any concerns with us.

Consequences for unacceptable behaviors may include any of the following:

* Loss of privileges, morning and/or lunch recess.
* In-School Suspension (ISS) Program
* Saturday School
* Out of School Suspension
* 3-B Detention Center Suspension Program
* Referral to Juvenile authorities
Students Going Home Early

Parents are urged to leave their children in school all day. Appointments should be scheduled outside school hours as much as possible. If a child needs to be dismissed early, he/she should bring a note stating reason and time of dismissal or parents must check the student out with the office staff.

Students should never be allowed to walk home alone during school hours for safety reasons.

Dress Code

Student’s clothing should be clean, in good repair, and appropriate for the current weather conditions. Extremely tight fitting clothing, midriff tops, short shorts, bare feet, fishnet shirts, shirts without sides, and tank tops are considered non-conducive to the educational process and are unacceptable. Hats are not be worn in the building. Clothing promoting or alluding to products or actions inappropriate to the school environment will not be allowed.

Parents will be notified if inappropriate clothing is being worn to school.

Grading and Report Cards

Erickson operates on a trimester reporting system with Kindergarteners receiving a checklist of skills noting mastery at each trimester. First and second graders are evaluated on mastery of specific concept in terms of “Demonstrates Consistency”, “Progressing/Improving” or “Needs Improvement” For grades 3 through 6, a traditional evaluation system is provided as follows:

90%-100% = A
89%-80% = B
79%-70% = C
69%- 60 % = D

Health/ Immunization

State Law requires all elementary students to have proof of immunization before they attend school. Any pertinent health information should be shared with the school nurse as well as the child’s teacher or the principal.

Homebound students are those that will be out of school three weeks or more for illness. Please contact the school and upon a doctor’s recommendation homebound instruction will be arranged.

Erickson staff members are concerned for the health and well being of our students. Should a student become ill or be injured at school, parents will be contacted. To assist us, parents need to keep all pertinent telephone numbers current with the office. Emergency contacts are also helpful.

Lost and Found

Articles which have been found should be taken to the office. Lost items can be claimed by proper identification. It is recommended that items be marked with the owner’s name so items can be returned if lost. This also discourages unauthorized borrowing.  Students are encouraged to check the Lost and Found area located off the main hallway, across form the teachers lounge.

A labeled bottle from the pharmacy, including student’s name, dosage, type of medication and prescribing doctor is required. A student may not bring medication to school. An adult must take them to the school office, where the medication is logged in. If you have questions regarding mediation at school, please contact the office.

Newsletter

School newsletters are sent home the last Friday of each month. "Tiger Tales" contains many upcoming events and important information concerning our school. Please make note of various dates and events listed in the newsletter.

Many classrooms have a Friday folder which comes home each week. It may or may not require a signature. Please watch for it and read your child’s weekly report.

Pictures

We provide the opportunity to purchase school pictures at the beginning of the school year and again in the spring. Class pictures are planned for the springtime also. Pictures must be paid for at the time the picture is taken.

Placement of Students

Every teacher and student has unique talents and needs. We do our best to place children in the class that will provide an environment that optimizes success and (at the same time) maintains a balance between classes at the same grade level. Academic, emotional, social and personal needs of each child are considered when placing students in a classroom. Sometimes parents wish to be involved in this process. In order for that to happen, a written letter documenting the educational needs of the child needs to be address to the principal no later than May. 1st for the following school year. The final placement of students is ultimately determined by the school.

Playground

Recess time is an important part of the day. It’s an opportunity to play and learn how to get along with others while having fun. Staff is on duty to assist students if they need help. Erickson students should be aware of the following rules and regulations, established to protect the rights of every student and staff member.

Reading Emphasis

Erickson Faculty and Staff provides excellent reading instruction. Research show that reading instruction alone does not produce good readers; children must practice their reading skills oustide of school. There are may reading activities that encourage students to practice reading in interesting and challenging ways. Our school provides a Read With A Parent Night four times a year. Parents are encouraged to take advantage of this night. Check the newsletter for dates and times.

Safety Plan

Due to crisis in various schools throughout the nation, District #91 has asked schools to develop a Safety Plan. Erickson faculty, staff and select parents have developed a plan that should increase safety for all children at our school. This plan includes procedures for evacuations (for fires, bomb threats, etc.) and lockdown (for intruders, violence). Part of our safety plan requires that all doors except the front door remained locked at all times.

Teachers and staff are aware of the plans and students participate in monthly fire drills and quarterly lockdown drills.

Telephone Use

Please do not call the office and request that a message be delivered to your student. This causes a disruption of the school day. Teachers have telephones in their rooms, but use of the these phones are limited to emergency calls and school business. In order to preserve the school day, we urge you to make arrangements with your children before school hours. Please limit phone calls coming in to teh school to emergencies only.

Traveling To and From School

The following is a list to insure the safety of our students to and from school:

LEAVE EARLY ENOUGH TO ARRIVE ON TIME
* Students must cross at crosswalks.
* If they ride bicycles to school, they must follow bike rules and walk bicycles across crosswalks and on        school grounds.
* No one is to be walking up and down the east driveway as this is very dangerous.
* Students should always go straight home after school, unless alternate arrangements have been made. *“Walk with a Friend”.
* Obey all traffic laws.
* Stay away from canals.

Valuables/Toys/Sports Equipment

These items should not be brought to school. If your child does bring them to school and they are lost or broken the school is not responsible. Pagers, cell phones and hand held electronic games are not allowed at school for any reason.

Visitors

Parents and patrons are always welcome at our school. Visitor badges must be checked out at the office. If you would like to volunteer in a classroom or the library, please contact the office first. By letting the office coordinate volunteers, we can make the best possible arrangements and use of volunteer time.

Occasionally the school receives requests from students or parents to have friends or relatives accompany students to school for a visit. We do not honor these requests as it is disruptive to the educational day.

Withdrawal

Parents should notify the school office at least two (2) days prior to a student’s withdrawal from school.

Zero Tolerance for Weapons

It is the policy of the Board of Trustees of School District #91 that any student who has a firearm or explosive in their possession (either on their person, in their purse, handbag or duffel bag, or in their locker) will be immediately suspended from school. The administration of the building where the offense occurrs will hold a Due Process hearing within five (5) days of the incident and make a written recommendation for expulsion to the Board of Trustees, if the recommendation is deemed appropriate. If petitioned for expulsion, the Board will hold such hearing at its next regularly scheduled meeting, or at a special meeting, as the Board deems necessary.

In addition, any student who uses other deadly or dangerous weapons as defined in Federal Law Section 921 of Title 16 of the United States Code shall be subject to the same procedures and penalties described in the above paragraph.

Any student expelled under this section may not apply for re-admission for twelve months from the date of expulsion. If re-admission is granted after proper application, it will not occur until the start of the next grading term following approval of re-admission.
