Idaho State University has recently partnered with the Idaho State Department of Education to develop a professional development course, Teaching Mathematical Thinking, as part as the Idaho Math Initiative to ensure teachers are given the opportunity to stay current in mathematical education and research for their classrooms.

This course provides an opportunity to study fundamental mathematical theory underlying the content area of number and operation and structures of algebraic thinking. Topics will include: meanings of operations and how they relate to one another, computation within the number system as a foundation for algebra, the use of mathematical models, and the understanding student thinking. Emphasis will be given to developing ideas about multiplicative thinking, proportional reasoning, and algebraic reasoning.

Using students' ideas to build mathematical understanding during discussions is a key method for supporting all students. However, not all conversations are the same in structure, design, or intent. Planning for, and implementing, the right kind of math discussion greatly influences the learning outcomes from the discussion. This course will examine the different kinds of mathematical conversations that can be had based on students' ideas and participants will have opportunities to develop and practice these in their own classroom. Additional attention will be given to further developing teachers' questioning techniques to support student learning. While open to any grade level, this course is best suited for grades K-6.
