When will my sixth-grade student register for middle school?
For incoming seventh-graders: Counselors will conduct informational sessions at the elementary schools in April. At that time, registration forms will be handed out, along with information on how to fill out the form correctly. The registration form will need to be returned with student and parent signatures to his/her sixth-grade teacher. The sixth-grade teachers will forward the registration forms to the middle schools. To ensure that our students receive a well-rounded education, the students are assigned electives on what we call the wheel. This allows each student to experience the different types of electives we offer and make better-informed decisions when choosing electives in eighth- and ninth-grade. The middle schools offer a variety of elective classes, including: computers, drama, family and consumer sciences, art, industrial arts and choir.
For incoming eighth - and ninth-graders:
The registration process begins in February for 8th graders and March for 9th graders. Each student will be asked to choose his/her top 4 electives. The school will do its best to match up the students to his/her top choices.
Factors in creating schedules include not only student choice, but also teacher availability, maximum number of students allowed per class, etc.
Please note that students will not receive their schedule if the home address on file is not current or if the school has not received the student’s current immunization records. Schedules will be mailed when school is out.
What if we don’t live in Taylorview’s boundary area but want to attend Taylorview instead of another junior high?
If you want your student to attend Taylorview you need to read the Open Enrollment Policy and fill out a waiver request (link can be printed) or form can be picked up from the counseling department.
After registration is complete waiver requests will be considered and the Open Enrollment Policy will be followed.
If we receive waiver request beyond our enrollment capacity, students will be placed on a waiting list. Parents will be notified of their registration status during registration in August. We ask that interested parents be patient until this notification occurs.
What is the best way to help my child find his/her class at the start of the school year?
Student’s schedule will be mailed approximately two weeks before registration begins. Taylorview holds an Orientation night during registration in the evening. More information will be sent in the opening letter to students at the end of July. During this Orientation, students can come to the school, hear about the school rules, find their classes and look around the building.

How much homework should my child expect to bring home daily?
Homework is an integral part of education and is used to reinforce skills learned in the classroom. The amount of homework given in middle school will increase from what your child brought home in elementary school. Homework assignments range from 45 minutes minimum assigned to approximately 80 minutes maximum. In addition to homework, middle school students are assigned a required amount of minutes to be spent reading each night. It is recommended that students read a minimum of 30 minutes every evening.

My child has more than one teacher now. How does the parent-teacher conference work in middle school?
Middle school conferences are student-led conferences and take place twice a year for two days in both December and March. Prior to the time of conferences, students will prepare a portfolio. Parents will work with their student in the classroom reviewing the portfolio and at that time have the opportunity to meet the teachers. If a private meeting is requested by a parent, teachers will work with the parents to meet privately at this time or during a school day. Please let your teacher know in advance if you request a private conference. Conferences take place in the evening of the first day and in the morning of the second day.
My child will attend middle school next year. When is the orientation night?
Orientation night is scheduled during registration in August. More information will be available in the letter sent to parents and students at the end of July. As your child approaches the middle school experience, we want you to know that our teachers and staff are committed to providing the warm and nurturing environment that helps children develop their unique talents. To learn more about the opportunities and choices available to your child at Taylorview, please join us at our Middle School Information Night in August during registration. What is the “team-concept” and how does it work?
The team-concept has been implemented to strengthen the bond between teachers and students. Two teams are created for each grade with a number of teachers making up each team. Depending on the school and grade, teams have their own color, name, or both. The team concept allows the teachers and students to create a small community that leads to better student management and motivation. At Taylorview, orange and blue are our team colors.
How can I find out which team my child is on?
Students will learn which team they are on after receiving their school schedule. Student schedules will show the team number: 71 or 72 for seventh grade, 81 or 82 for eighth grade and 91 or 92 for 9th grade. We ask that students and parents do not request a team in the hope of being assigned a certain teacher or group of teachers as teachers might be reassigned or a new teacher may be hired. Team changes can be requested two weeks after school has started. Students need to visit with the principal to share their concerns in writing.

What if my child is absent for an extended period of time?
If students miss more than 8 days a semester they will lose credit if they do not make the time up.
If my child is absent, what is the policy on homework?
Absent students will be allowed time to complete work they missed in proportion to the days they missed. For instance, if a child misses two days, he/she will be given two days to complete the missing homework.
If you know in advance that your child will miss school for an extended period of school (i.e. 2 or more days of vacation) you can notify the attendance clerk and request assignments. Please try to contact the office by 9:30 am. Parents may also check on PowerSchool for assignment information. It is best to notify the schools as soon as possible as teachers need at least 24 hours to prepare a homework plan. Once the homework has been gathered, parents can come to the school and pick it up or request that the homework is sent home with a sibling or neighbor.
Does my child need a physical?
Students do not need a physical to attend school; however, participation in some after-school sports requires a physical. When a physical is required, the coach will distribute the appropriate forms for the student’s doctor to fill out. Forms can also be picked up in the front office. If the student does not have a regular pediatrician, students can receive a physical at a Community or Urgent Care facility. Students only need one physical for their 7th and 8th grade school year, and all 9th grade students need a physical to participate in after school sports. One physical no matter how many sports they would like to play.
