Instruction

K: establish a consistent schedule for science instruction tied to Journeys units

 

Gr. 1-6: establish a schedule for science and completely teach 1 bundle by the end of Trimester 2. Use the year to determine a sequence of bundles.  Begin using phenomena to guide instruction

 

Gr. 7-8: teach the standards and appropriate bundles at each grade level; learn what components of STEMscopes work best.  Use the year to determine a sequence of bundles. Begin using phenomena to guide instruction.

Professional Learning, Training/Support, PLC

K: Two-day program and NGSS training for all science teachers in October.  Provide the same and additional training for instructional coaches.  Provide optional, online program agnostic training from Accelerate Learning for coaches and teachers of all levels.  In Year 2, provide 1 day grade level collaboration to discuss previous year and plan collaboratively for next 2 bundles.  Provide initial program training to teachers new to the district.

K: Use teacher survey to measure baseline data of science instruction.  Begin observation of science instruction similar to that done in Math Project.  Develop a “Look for” document for principals.  Train principals on NGSS and the implied instructional shifts.

Assessment

 

Gr. 1-6: At least one summative assessment is given in each bundle/unit taught.

Gr. 5: Operational Field Test of revised ISAT in grades 5, 8, and 11.

 

Gr. 6-8: At least one summative assessment is given in each bundle/unit taught.

Gr. 8: Operational Field Test of revised ISAT in grades 5, 8, and 11.
